1.30.12_rinse. repeat.

Spending 10 straight hours at work today with no lunch brought this phrase to mind. Type was set in LetterMpress then assembled in Photoshop.

1.29.12_atom met bomb

This is a revised version of a page in an Abecediary book I've been working on. The subject matter is the atom bomb. I'm strangely fascinated by the history of the bomb, the science, but I abhor what it has done and what it stands for.

1.28.12_the white rabbit

He may look sweet and innocent but, trust me, he is after your blood. Giant wooden rabbits, cows being tossed from castles, monks hitting themselves in the head with books...what can't British humor employ to good effect! Make a knight of it, see Spamelot.

1.26.12_moving forward

Played with collage today and combined with one of my favorite typefaces, Eames Century Modern.

1.25.12_nicer people

Bad fax provides great texture. It also represents my disappointment with some people today.

1.23.12_wind and rain gathers

Last night the tornado siren went off, twice. The wind and rain were definitely gathering. The good news is, no tornado landed. The artwork here was created from an original watercolor piece created by my daughter when she was in preschool.

1.22.12_Wish I Could Talk

My cat is sick today. I wish she could tell me what's wrong. I had this photo of her which I printed out, then overlaid tracing paper to create the type. I like the mix of hand-rendered type and photography.

1.21.12_rain in my bedroom

I don't mind a good dose of rain. I just don't want it coming from above me while in my bed! Upstairs bathroom leaking problem: not resolved.

1.20.12_searching for answers

Just saw the movie Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, a cinematic gem. While it is heart wrenching in many respects, my daughter came up with today's six word statement, a message she took away from the movie. We were both emotionally drained at the end...but what an adventure it was.

1.19.12_beauty in aging

This is one of many photos I have taken involving worn type and texture. I love the variations in color and how the aging affects the letter form. It's a beautiful thing.

1.18.2012_sketch with abandon

Teaching a conceptual thinking class today, I implored students to sketch with confidence. It takes courage to face that stark, blank paper daring you to come up with an idea. But the more confident you are, the more you'll be able to explore and reach new solutions. So sketch with abandon. Sketch with confidence. Sketch like your life depended on it.

1.17.12_Man with the Golden Mind

I couldn't resist making an homage to the great Saul Bass. I've been totally absorbed in the new compendium about him from Laurence King publishing, "Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design". I highly recommend this book which provides historical perspective, sketches and background stories, and many great examples of the designer's work.

The First 16 Days

My goal is simple—to create something new every day. The only criteria is that I use six words in my image. Because I am just starting this project now, I have grouped my first 16 images as one. I will let my day guide the visuals I create. Maybe I'll try out a new typeface, or play more with texture. I might be influenced by a song I heard on my drive into work, or interesting dialogue in a movie. Here's to a creative year!
