In 2012, I challenged myself to create something new every day. The parameters? Use six words. As the year progressed, I ended up breaking the 6-word rule but the main point was to explore imagery, investigate form and texture, and, of course, play with type. You'll see a range of work. Much of it was influenced by what took place that day, everything from the weather to politics. Some of the results were stunning, some not so much. But that's what the creative process is all about.

2.24.12_the cat jumped over the moon
Thanks to my daughter for the inspired collage. I just added a color overlay and the type. I haven't touched Cooper Black since the 80s but if it's good enough for The Black Keys, it's good enough for me.

2.20.12_God in a box
Driving home from work today I saw a church sign that said, "Coming soon: God in a Box". An image of old carnival posters immediately popped into my head.

2.18.12_bad news suit
This is a collage that was assembled in Photoshop piecing together separately scanned type and images. I also explored texture with this piece.
2.17.12_ask joe
More fun with collage. I just let the process evolve with no pre-determined message. The end result is "Pope Joe" with his Target crown and roast chicken scepter. The message is not a commentary on Catholicism as much as it is on the sources of consolation we seek in our pets and our belongings.

2.16.12_pair of type cranes
A project we assign our typography students is to create an animal out of type using the letters of the animal's name in the illustration. I used the typeface Neutraface Condensed in various weights to create my cranes. I like the font's clean, angular lines.

2.11.12_dr. atomic & mr. haydn
In honor of tonight's symphony concert, I used some of my research material from the atom bomb era. The "Mixed Parts" image was taken from a box I had received years ago. Always wanted to use it in something. This seemed appropriate.

2.10.12_handy elephant
I want an elephant I can hold in my hand! Background texture was built up with layers starting with a pattern overlaid with solid color. Photoshop brushes were used to age the image. The next layer was the yellow "e", a photo I took of signage letters. On top of that is a worn, painted "E" seen on the side of an old building. Typeface is Eames Century Modern, one of my favorites.

2.4.12_fresh hot coffee
I shot this gas station sign awhile ago in Paducah, Kentucky. Using letter forms that existed within the original sign image, I created my six word message. Signage with characters missing or falling off have such character.

2.2.12_green eggs
I have this wonderful book called "Bla, Bla: 600 Incredibly Useless Facts". So my digital collage was created based on this random item about chickens and eggs.
